The morning of day 6 started dreary and rained quite a lot. Not a big surprise for this area of the country… We still set out on our route though, determined not to let the cold and wet stop us from seeing some sights that my friend particularly wanted to see. A lot of people have seen the movie “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and loved the scenery in the movie. Probably the most unforgettable scene of the whole movie, at least for me it was, is the one of Ben Stiller longboarding down a long, curvy road, past a large waterfall, just living and enjoying life. I’ll probably never forget this scene. My friend had googled the location of the hotel shown in the town he arrives at, and found that it was the Hotel Aldan in Seyðisfjörður, at the base of a long twisty road down the mountains into its narrow little fjord. More research led me to find that this twisty road down to Seyðisfjörður supposedly has 25 waterfalls along its length. One of these, Gufufoss, while browsing pictures, I recognized as the one Ben Stiller longboards past… We decided we’d make the trip down this road to the picturesque little town of Seyðisfjörður and see the scenes from the movie…
Unfortunately, the rain ruined much of the view for the drive down to Seyðisfjörður… You have to climb high up a mountain and then head down the twisty road to the town. I could tell that it must have been one hell of a view, but one that was completely obscured by clouds and mist. I couldn’t even see the river with the falls most of the time, it was just far enough back from the road to be hidden. It was disappointing to miss that view, but, the weather had been good for most of Iceland, so I won’t complain about it!
The little town of Seyðisfjörður was quaint and exactly what I would picture any little Icelandic town to look like. We snapped our pictures of the Hotel Aldan, I walked to the water’s edge for some more pictures, but then it was back in the car. The rain had turned into a drizzle, but it was still cold and wet, and we wanted to go back up the road to that waterfall from the movie!
Gufufoss was not really that high above the town, however, just that slight elevation increase meant we were now back in the miserable rain as opposed to the drizzle at the bottom… Pictures here were even faster than at the bottom, and still we climbed back into the car all wet. Oh well… It was fun to see some shots where the movie was filmed and where Ben Stiller portrayed his scenes. Even if the movie had never been filmed here, I would highly recommend the drive out of your way for this town. With good weather, it would be amazing… We quickly set off to our next destination where we had plenty to see around Lake Myvatn!!
